Classroom Climate Control: How to Control Special Needs & Regular Students — The Correct Way
By Coach Thomas Stewart, B.S./M.S.
After 38 years in the classroom—and 34 of those working with students with behavioral disorders and special needs—I decided it was time to pass on what I’ve learned. Classroom Climate Control is more than just a book; it’s a lifetime of teaching, coaching, learning, and growing with some of the most incredible young people you’ll ever meet.
This book is filled with the methods I used to create structure in my classes, especially for students who were often misunderstood or overlooked. My goal wasn’t just to teach—my goal was to reach. Whether through individualized lesson plans, behavior charts, or using art and creativity to help students express themselves, everything in this book was tested and proven in real classrooms with real students.
You’ll read about my journey from regular education into Special Education, about the state recognition we received in 1976, and how a seventh-grade boy named Darryell changed the entire course of my life—and gave me an epiphany I’ll never forget.
If you’re a teacher who wants practical strategies that actually work, or a parent looking for better ways to support your child, or even a policymaker trying to understand what’s happening inside our schools—this book is for you. I wrote it in plain, honest language, with real stories, because that’s how I taught and lived my career.
I’ve always believed: students may forget what you say, and they may forget what you do—but they’ll never forget how you made them feel. I hope this book helps you create a classroom where every student feels seen, respected, and capable of success.
Thank you for reading,
Coach Thomas Stewart
